Oh I am so constrained in the fussing and chronology of daily life/time! I want out, out, out! Why can't I dream/write/drift/stabilize/be alone and content with it?

The above declaration sounds distressed, but I feel like I'm actually on to something. Achievement can so easily become a False God for me, a goal in and of itself, and I know, I KNOW, that when that happens it actually cuts me off from my vital, interior, messy, generative self.

Scraping too low is bad, it's re-traumatizing; but continual "growth" toward more and more achievement is also not necessarily the way I want to try to live. I don't want to be perfect, that I'm confident of. Wanting to be "successful" is more of a lure, and at a certain level that's for real, practical reasons. But it can also so easily get out of control.

I want to grow; not drive/experience "growth" in the sense of capital. & those are not, NOT, the same thing.

this lovely essay about "personhood" by Johanna Hedva was epiphanic and clarifying for me today.

I've also been meaning to link this essay from Mo Ryan about Cordelia Chase for a few days, hat tip to [personal profile] musesfool. Cordelia <3

rewatching Buffy after watching What We Do In The Shadows is a different experience. tbh I think I like Guillermo at least in part due to female/queer slayer intertextuality :)

I'm not watching Interview With The Vampire, have never been a Rice fan, but wow they look like they're having fun over there, too. 2022 vampires returning to late 20th c cultural roots ftw, I guess, lol

Buffy still holds up for me. Joss just turned out to be unable to improve based on his insights. If anything, it makes it more interesting, now that it goes in my box with MZB and OSC and other wrongheaded artists, whose wrongheaded passionate creativity compels me

I've been adding my vids to my ao3 page, and in the process revisited my "unposted" folder ... these three vids have been lurking there since I swear to you 2013, because I completed them and then was overcome with personal shame for several years, sigh, I keep thinking I've moved beyond this and then I find things like this. They're lovely, they're finished, I'm sharing them, what was I tripping on?

the thing about the long northern winter is that, when you get these first March thaws, even the promise of a single degree above freezing can cause massive eucatastrophic feelings about the approach of spring. imagine what it'll feel like once the temp hits 40F!

there was a really lovely thread on ffa about the problems with the poverty-finance-maturity themes of Buffy S6 that got me thinking a lot about heroic narratives and communitarian ethos. for all that the Scooby Gang are held up as a found family, imo Buffy is much more a story about isolated strength; the iconic moments that hang in my mind are all of B on her own, stripped of resources, digging even deeper into herself in order to go on. and I think about the inspiration I've drawn from that sort of thing, the "time to save yourself; no one else will save you" attitude that i've come to rely on in hard times. how much of that is maladaptive?

(the suggestion from the thread of an alternate possible thematic for Buffy's maturation, that of her dependence on/conflict with the institutional power of the Council, is totally burning up my brain. do I want to write it? I maybe want to write it, idk.)

Also, how is it possible that the FIRST TWO GODDAMN MINUTES of the Buffy pilot - THE PILOT - are better than everything ever?

{tred tired semester teaching exam list argh} - so pretty much the usual. Except I'm pretty sure that when George Gissing told me that "there are half a million more women than men in this happy country of ours," i.e. Victorian Britain, he was either wrong, lying, or doing some really weird shit with population statistics. Because. That can't possibly be true.

And, for a change, I am writing words that are fictiony! Which is making me so, so, so happy. And, yanno, maybe someday I'll even finish a fic and I can do that thing I used to do where I posted the words on the internet and people read them. In the meantime, meme! Ganked from everywhere, idek:
