Do not want Dracula. omg, guys, the file from LibriVox is like 16 hours long. Ug ug ug. No words for how much I don't want to read this book. Oh well. Working on Jane Eyre hath its price.

The world outside is gross. Utterly, irredemably gross. Which is a bad thing, because I'm having cabin fever and also body improvement thoughts, and really ought to go for a two hour walk and listen to Dracula, and I maybe even would if the world didn't suck so utterly. Seriously, one of my profs even cancelled class today because the freezing slush is so completely objectionable.

Tonight I'm going to make a big curry and get some writing done. Said writing ought to be on my thesis, but is just as likely to involve my rentboy!AU of my boyfriend's novel. Also, got the Christian Bale Little Women in my netflix this afternoon, so there will perhaps be Laurie. Oh god, Laurie. Yum.

I have to remember that I love my work. I have to remember how lucky I am, to be in a situation where my most unpleasant task is to have to write a paper on a fairy tale.

What do you hate about Dracula so much?

Oh, wow. I haven't watched Little Women since before I knew who actors were, and so I must watch again. But yeah, I still remember the yummy.

I'm a huuuuge fan of female gothic, but I tend to find male gothic a bit meh. In general - and this is an enormous generalization, I know - I feel like female gothic subverts hard enough that it can get away with its own conventionality. With male gothic, I get a bit too hung up on the virgin fetish porn.

I'm not a big fan of horror in general. I love the internality of the gothic, and the fairytale/uncanny stuff, but the more pornographic horror of "Dracula" leaves me pretty cold. Have you read Carol Clover's stuff on modern horror? She gets into some of my squicks.

With male gothic, I get a bit too hung up on the virgin fetish porn. Van Helsing does get really into it during the transfusion scenes. ;) It took me a couple tries, but I really enjoy Dracula.

Have you read "Carmilla" by Sheridan LeFanu? I need to re-read Jane Eyre, too--it's been as long as since I've seen Little Women!

I haven't read anything by Clover, but I'll look it up. Really, it's ridiculous--last semester as a senior, and I haven't looked at nearly enough criticism and essays!

Yeah, I'm somehow getting the idea that I need to read Carmilla! When I get this many recs for a thing, I figure I pretty much have to read it.
