My partner A trained as a lawyer, and he's been explaining to me some of the deep damage these decisions are going to cause. Like rats gnawing at the basis of civilization. It's not great.
It's the Republicans' one great success, isn't it? They can no longer win fair elections, but they can destroy democracy by suing any bit of it they don't like, taking the case to SCOTUS, and getting whatever result they want handed to them.
You're not wrong. It's especially bitter because, within the last ten years, there was only ever one realistic chance to move the court substantially left instead of way, way, way to the right, but there was one. Trump appointed three judges and one of the those seats was already open during the 2016 election, while RBG's seat falling open during the winner's presidency was extremely predictable. I keep seeing people insisting that Biden should, I guess, assume dictatorial powers over the legislative and judicial branches of government and many seem to be the same people who wouldn't sully themselves by supporting Democrats in 2016 when voting actually had the power to affect the composition of the court.
Conservatives understand and care about this, but much of the US left seems to think caring about SCOTUS appointments and actions of the overall administration rather than individual personalities is for cringe normies so (collectively speaking) it doesn't motivate us the same way.
