Studs Terkel, 1912-2008
Nov. 1st, 2008 01:00 pmStuds Terkel passed away last night. He was 96, and he's been unwell for a long time now, but I had wished that he could have lived to see Change come rolling in on Tuesday, and to see a Chicagolander in highest office.
I was born to the sound of Studs' voice - my mama and dad were listening to his radio program in the last hours of her labor. Daddy used to listen to Studs illicitly as a boy, hiding his radio in bed to listen to the interviews. My grandmother has all his books. Studs Terkel taught me how to view the world with openness and compassion - he talked to everyone, the famous and the hidden, the joyous and the cynical, the progressive and the conservative, the rich and the poor. His worldview was a tapestry of all these voices, lives, ideas, and they all coexisted, had to all coexist.
Rest in peace, Studs. I'll mourn you with gratitude for all that you were, and all those you touched.
