May. 16th, 2006 05:17 pmMy great-grandmother had a stroke today. She's in the hospital, and my grandparents are driving down to be with her. That's all I know--my family's out for the day.
She's ninety years old, and she lived in her own home unsupported until last year. She's a powerful, crochety, brilliant lady who knows more piano music by heart than most have forgotten in a lifetime. She still plays almost every day, and always from memory. The music just comes out of her.
I hope that she doesn't linger. It sounds horrible, but I hope that she passes on. She was so unhappy when she had to move into the home, so afraid of losing her power. She woke up about an hour ago, and the only thing she said was "I'm scared." I hope that she doesn't have to live as an invalid. Her left side is paralyzed.
