Am having unhappy handwaving at all the scholarship that casts Sherlock Holmes as the Kyriarchal Avenger. Not saying ACD didn't have The Problems with race/class/gender, not to mention the weird imperial Issues, but still! Holmes can be on the side of the angels, damn it!

Sulking now. And then finishing writing up my rebuttals for the purposes of this dratted paper.

eta: yo, in formal writing, is is Doyle or Conan Doyle? I somehow think the latter, but I just realized that I don't really have a justification for that, and that I should probably know what I'm doing for real here.

I really think it's the latter, but I lack a citation to prove it.

Methinks they doth protest too much. Holmes is no happy warrior.

Yeah, it really seems like they're reading against the text in a lot of ways.

Oh oh oh I wanted to ask you (and I'm just going to jump into this thread to do so), have you read Matt Cook's "London and the subculture of homosexuality, 1885-1914"? Because it seems like you probably have, but if not, I just wanted to rec it. It's like the perfect single-volume non-fiction companion to H/W fandom. I have a big ol' meta post I need to make about it sometime. Maybe even tonight. Who knows.

Whatever ACD wrote in canon, and I think the critics are essentially right, you can rewrite or overwrite in fan fiction. It is my strong suggestion that you do so. Do not question my motivations for saying so...certainly not to give me more lovely H/W fan fic to read. Oh not that.

I think it's Conan Doyle (based on a very quick search of our library catalog and Google Scholar/Google Books). It's also what the Arthur Conan Doyle society uses.

It is always Conan Doyle, in any reference that I have ever seen - that was his full surname.
