I was a member of a site once that not only had mandatory binary gender, but put a little male or female symbol next to your username that was visible throughout the site. They've since stopped doing that, but I thought it was kind of tasteless.
Hey, nice to meet you! I'll add you as a friend right now. I too am most annoyed and surprised at LJ's arbitrary decision, but I just got my account set up so I'll be sticking around there. Not sure what the difference between that and this is actually....anywayz, see you soon!
Um, it's calling me anonymous. You might have gathered, this is Reading_Is_In from LJ. I'm trying something to establish my id here. If it doesn't work, well, it's me. :)
As far as the difference between LiveJournal and Dreamwidth - here - Dreamwidth is a LiveJournal code fork made and owned, essentially, by fandom. It got started last year. Eljay has a history of treating fandom badly, so this is our clubhouse. A lot of acafandom operates over here, and a lot of the more politicized fannish things as well. There's got to be about a metric boatload of meta and conversation about it - check around last spring.
I post all my content here, mirroring it on LiveJournal and directing comments back. I do still read a LiveJournal friendslist but I'm pretty dedicated to Dreamwidth, because I really like the idea of fangirls doing it for themselves.
I'm sure you're still in setup over on LiveJournal, but if you'd ever like to check Dreamwidth out, let me know and I'll sling you an invite code.
