In his dream, the spectre of Elfarran had had Tenar's face: Tenar's face as it had been when he'd first met her as a girl on Atuan, pale and weighed down with the heavy black inky fall of her hair, and she had wailed as the old gods he'd called up by his hubris had eaten her.
