(A thought I have about how to get back to Journal Fandom Vibes is that I want to link pieces of "real" writing -- i.e. not corporate/SEO -- I find around the web. The internet has been my source for this sort of writing for decades now, and I fear that it's getting harder and harder to find. Thus, linkspam!)

Jude Doyle on Jonah Hill and toxic masculinity (medium link)

Alba M. on Rimbaud and adultism (medium link)

Anne Helen Petersen on Bedrotting and Loud Quitting (substack link)

What varied and interesting links!! I learnt something from each of them :D Of all things, that last one left me with a new, possibly better perspective on TikTok as well. Thanks for sharing!

I can't say that I understand TikTok in the context of fandom well yet (in that the thought of reccing a fic with my real face on video Does Not Appeal), but the part about trying to make sense of the world, like the world of work they've been sold as Being It since childhood, and then building on top of each other's edits to build to the understanding that actually work doesn't have to be their entire lives, things like that, in the medium they're most familiar with, resonated. I suppose it's the same for fandom/fic stuff but... I'm not quite there yet :D Haha.

I enjoyed that masculinity article. It wasn't a direction I'd seen before but it made a lot of sense. There's tons of resources showing that abusers in therapy will use therapy language in order to abuse--seems similar.

First off: There’s nothing inherently evil or nefarious about being a male feminist. Abusers become feminists for the same reason they become teachers or priests or Little League coaches — they have more access to vulnerable people when they operate from a position of trust

OOF. Hit me like a ton of bricks. Good analysis!
