I need to take a moment and try to figure out how to properly sign up at the comm, I tried to post a comment in the current post over there but you have to be a member, and I got busy and gave up!

Are you writing this for a particular pairing / fandom?

Yes -- I'm dismayed to discover, for a very rare pairing! I just finished the second book of Philip Pullman's Book of Dust series, and while I haven't thought much of them as literature, I'm very excited to have a new supporting cast for Lyra. The fandom overwhelmingly ships Lyra/Will, which I never liked much myself; no-one seems to have gotten on board with the new love interest yet. But I like the ship, it reminds me of the second-love-after-tragedy romance in the Sally Lockhart books, of which I am also fond.

So I'm playing! These little trope prompts are a fun way to break ground in a newish fandom headspace. I have to decide if I'm going to make them into strict proper drabbles, or expand the story sections. I might just leave the pieces small? The corner of the fandom's so tiny, it feels proportionate :)

Do you mean Malcolm/Lyra? I think you're the first person I've seen expressing positivity for that ship! I agree with you re. Book of Dust -- I'm very disappointed with them as literature, but it's really interesting to see new supporting cast and see different aspects of the world. I'm glad you've found a ship to inspire you too!

I do! The thing is, Lyra's a strong OTC for me -- I resented Will in HDM, because he stole narrative space from her, and I found her muted in her relationship with him. Mal is like Will in some clear ways that give the ship footing -- Lyra's got a type, and it's guys with cats -- but I find that, as a character, he's designed to show Lyra off, rather than compete with her.

Mostly I just want Lyra to move on and be happy. I can see why the fandom at large likes the Tragic Doomed Adolescent romance, but ... at the moment, I find I'm all about second-chance adult love stories that make the female character happier, not sadder, lol.
