Yes, but the Elizabethan stage was inhabited in part by boy actors who gave a more convincing performance as boys than as girls. (The fandom equivalent might be MarySues who give a more convincing performance as cardboard.) John Franceschina wrote an amazing book called Homosexualities in the English Theatre From Lyly to Wilde--flatly written but piling up mountains of evidence about early modern theatrical practice.
