Jack is a total bastard who doesn't care about anybody except his wife. He thinks he cares though, which is what makes him so bad for other people to be around. Alana has a similar problem, or maybe in the first season it's that she cares too much about professional ethics and not enough about the actual larger problems happening (which she isn't aware of). Actually I guess I'd say her problem is that she thinks she's got everything figured out via her professional psychologist lens, but she's seeing through a glass darkly.
I think reading the show as a downfall definitely works, but it's also very possible to read the show as a (very dark) transformation, of Will's sea change into something rich and strange.
