The Birthright, by Bekah. This is a long Pride and Prejudice class-reversal au that's really almost deliciously hyper-romantic. Darcy and Wickham with their positions swapped - so Wickham is the eligible young bachelor and Darcy has the living at Kympton that canon!Wickham chose not to take. Very much Austen as crossed with Eliot - lots of loving descriptions of strong masculine bodies at work, but still fundamentally hopeful of the possibility of true heterosexual love.

Colour me surprised at a fic in the Austen fandom being fundamentally hopeful of the possibility of true heterosexual love. ;)

(There are a couple of fics with that basic exchange idea, and what bothers me, though I think I've read and enjoyed them all, is that they assume their personality is biological or genetic, or some other variation of pure 'nature'.)

Yeah, but I'm mucking about so much with George Eliot that it's refreshing!

(ugh, no. I'd think that premise would actually encourage the opposite - exploring what the characters would be like under different circumstances! but genetic determinism never wavers.)
