I had an epiphany today: I can deal with the concept of modernism if I connect it to the increasing naming of names with regard to gender, sexuality, and the psyche. I've always found myself allergic to the concept in the past - mainly because it was always explained to me from a very masculinist "oh noes the world be changing I don leik it!" perspective. But if I think of Havelock Ellis and all that lot as a turning point in modernity - that, I can get on board with. I'm glad to have figured this out - it will make my upcoming reading course on sex and gender in modernity progress much more smoothly.

The Uni bookstore ran out of my undergrads' required readings, so .pdfing ahoy tomorrow. And nearly all of the central campus printers appear to have broken at once. I feel bad for the kids - and I hope they don't use it as an excuse to not hand assignments in or do the reading.

Also, I seem to have fallen into Remus/Sirius (Three Year Summer style), and I can't get up. So I would totally take recs! /hint hint

(I'm working in my bookstore for rush this year and my spare moments have been spent checking out the books in the English aisle and saying, "Want!")

Oh, it's a program-wide anthology. Big Ten Freshman Comp and all that. But I get to pick the essays, so we're doing bell hooks and Stuart Hall and Susan Bordo and one on how Batman is really kinda gay.

I'd give you recs, but as of the last week, I seem to have fallen into Remus/Severus.

I find your perspective on modernism very interesting. Because I was introduced to it through the beginnings of post-modernism (when everything modernism every slightly questioned was thrown out of the window in a fit of justifiable philosophic rage), it's always been a progressive movement and a definite part of the Western canon towards our (left-wing) answers on gender, sexuality, and the psyche.

I've got warring ideas on modernism, because on the one hand, with regard to Victorian literature modernism kind of is the revolution. But from the pov of pomo feminist theory, where I was born and raised so to speak, it's the thing that needs to be exploded. So I'm walking the tightrope, trying to find middle ground that satisfies all the aspects of my academic background!

Is there still work being done on female/feminist modernism or modernism and gender? I'm not really up to date with it since reading the Kime Scott stuff in the mid-1990s.

I have been here for less than twenty-four hours and am tearing my hair out, man. I'm seriously considering overpaying for a 1-bedroom because I don't want to deal with crazy roommates.

I think I'd almost do it - I don't know if I could deal with having roommates at this point in my life. Are there studios available? Cause privacy over space, man, every time.

I'm getting better at weeding out the crazies, by the reply stats are dismal. Maybe 1 of every six people I e-mail replies, and of them 2/3 are crazy or misrepresented themselves. ARGH.
