Realization Go Boom
Mar. 22nd, 2007 06:12 pmMy brain seems to have just wrapped itself around the perfect way that Sam/Dean maps onto Boromir/Faramir, especially some of the very early stuff.
There was a writer of ff.n, back when there were only a few hundred LotR fics there, who wrote what I remember as very lovely Faramir/Boromir-Denethor fics. I went looking for them at the back end of the archive, but they seem to have disappeared, and it was long enough ago that I remember neither names nor titles.
which also, whoa time capsule. My own seven-years-ago fic (lord I wrote like a nit as a child), the Woke Up Gay stories, Amy Fortuna and Victoria Bitter and old names I'd forgotten, and several Mary Sues that I would swear I actually remembered. What happens to Gandalf? Does he die? NO! the pure love of this elf maiden returns him to health. But not the thing I was looking for. Anyway.
The two families map so prettily on to each other! Sam the reluctant warrior, but stronger for that reluctance. Dean the good soldier, the favored son, who really doesn't like mumbo jumbo but goes instead for his sword. Steward John, haunted by his dead wife, placing his obsessive battle before the need to parent his sons. Eowyn as Jess! The shiny shiny correspondence of John's "if you leave for college don't come back" and Denethor's "that will depend on the manner of your return". Ack!
...Now I really want to read Boromir/Faramir. Or the high!fantasy!Winchesters that
janissa11 came up with here.
half an hour till new spn eee!
eta: not that the characters match up perfectly, which really is the shiny part of Supernatural--Dean is also sensitive and smart, and Sam can open whoop-ass like no other when he's in the mood to. Although I think it does explain my positioning as a Samgirl, because I think I maybe map Faramir on him a bit too much, and Faramir is one of my firstest Own True Loves.
