(Academic hilarity for you: last month I received an e-mail from a professor whose class I'm taking next semester. It's very long and I need to re-read it, but he did indeed use the words "take home, closed-book midterm." That's so cute.)

It gets better: He's the department chair.
He's originally from Germany, so I have no clue if this might be some sort of European university education thing.
We're also using his textbook on the subject that he wrote in the 1980s.
