8:42 Oh my god, McCain, shut the fuck up.

8:44 Obama goes to the core issue, props to Biden, props to Petraeus?!?! Come on, man. But now he's going back to the beginning of the war, the weapons of mass destruction, greeted as liberators.

8:45 McCain is being patronizing - I'm afraid senator Obama doesn't understand. Comes off as kinda racist, monumentally stupid, because Obama's obviously no dummy. Talking down to him just makes McCain look small.

8:46 I am a bit worried that McCain's being so much more specific on war stuff. Middle America looooves its military puffery, and he's actually playing into that pretty well.

8:49 Aaaaand we have Osama Bin Laden! Thanks, Johnny.

8:52 Obama's doing "Americans won't be safe" rhetoric. I don't appreciate it.

8:53 ... McCain might be scoring a point here. He sounds reasonable, strong, sane. It's a miracle, but he does. For the first time maybe ever.

8:55 Damage control from Obama - McCain's a hypocrite, that helps, but - ooh, "he may be a dictator, but he's our dictator." This is good, maybe enough to save.

8:57 again, Senator Obama doesn't understand. God he is so skeeve.

8:58 REAGAN!!! faugh.

8:59 THAT MY SON'S DEATH WON'T BE IN VAIN!?!?! OH, COME ON!

9:00 Obama's trying to compete with the story, bad idea possibly?

9:01 can we get back to social issues, please? There's more to this than war and troop stories and all of that. I know this is the foreign policy debate, but there's more to foreign policy than military matters. NAFTA, the global gag rule, so many other pressing issues. HIV.

9:03 Overweeningly pro-Israel language from McCain, a second Holocaust? I think he just Godwin-ed himself. The whole thing is weird, because the question was regarding Iran. Israel whut? Completely out of nowhere, so far as I can tell.

9:04 Did McCain just propose an alliance with the French? But I thought they threatened our freedom and ate babies! Seriously, thought, kind of props to him on that.

9:07 "this notion that by not talking to people we are punishing them"

9:08 McCain can't talk, flaps his tongue around impotently, puts Hugo Chavez on a level with Ahmadinejad, is an idiot.

9:09 Obama puts the smackdown re: Iranian power structures.

9:10 McCain's own advisers agree with Obama. Man, John's in a bad way here - I can see why he didn't want to do this debate.

9:11 hee, Obama mocks the stupid axis of evil line. Ilu, Barry.

9:14 Reagan again. Pfht.

9:15 McCain oversimplifies, gets a giggle, makes snide remarks about how amused Kissinger would be at Obama's policy ideas, is generally a cobag.

9:18 McCain says for a third time that Obama doesn't understand, naivete, and then starts off on the KGB.

9:20 By the way, McCain went there once. (snerk)

9:22 having a shallow moment here - Obama so pretty.

9:23 Obama brings is back to energy, connecting Russia to other rogue states. Mentions offshore drilling, which is worrisome, but then makes the very sane point that we don't actually have enough oil, so we'd better start developing alternative energy sources. Throws McCain's bad record in his face, energy independence, and back to the economic crisis.

9:24 McCain says drilling is a bridge; my brain is making snide remarks about Sarah Palin's Bridge to Nowhere.

9:25 all Obama wants is to store nuclear byproducts safely. Nice one, Barry.

9:26 Oh sweet zeus, here we go. 9-11, 9-11, 9-11. Also maverick, in case we forgot.

9:27 No torture through trained interrogators? Does that make any sense? I don't really see the distinction he's drawing here, save a fairly pointless semantic one. We can't declare America safe, he says.

9:28 Here's Barry: port security, not a nuclear missile, the bomb's in a suitcase

9:29 Obama wants to restore our standing with the rest of the world, in order to shore up our long-term security. To get back to the idea that "America's that shining beacon on the hill"

9:30 For a fourth time, McCain says Senator Obama "doesn't understand, doesn't get it."

9:31 McCain says our sacrifices are "fragile," which is bull. Lives lost are always meaningful, dipstick, no matter what. Way to respect the troops.

9:33 Obama goes back to military spending, points out that the economic decline will eventually take down the defense budget, no matter what. Veteran's hospitals, PTSD victims. Broader strategic vision.

9:34 McCain says he's been doing this for twenty years, says there are benefits to experience, is amazingly trying to connect Obama to George Bush??? Okay, man, you just went loooooo-py. He's spinning so hard, he's completely ceased to make sense.

9:36 Obama's going back to his father, to the inspiration of the American Dream. He argues that it's been lost, that the next President has to invest in issues that "relate to how ordinary people get to live out their dreams." Genius. Gorgeous. Oh Barry.

9:37 McCain finishes with veterans, "I know how to heal the wounds of war."

And that's it - Veep debate next week! I can't wait. Palin can't even hold up against Katie Couric; I can't imagine what Biden will do to her.

THIS. I really would've liked to have seen that, because they're all things I'm not as knowledgeable about either candidate's position. Most people know their opinions on wars, it was just about how they came across explaining or defending them.

Heh, one of the commentators afterwards said "when he started talking about Alexander the Great, I thought he was going to say he met him, too!" *g*

Test, just a test
