Legistlation is being drafted in Indiana that would criminalize reproduction that does not involve sexual intercourse and also restricts childbearing with criteria like marital status, past abortion history, and (!?!?!) church attendence/family values.

This is ridiculous and sick and just plain wrong in every way that I can think of. The Indiana Republican Party is trying to control who can have babies, with who, and when. There is no defense for this proposed bill. The state Attorney General has also been trying to access medical record of abortions for the better part of a year now. There is something rotten in the state of Indiana, and this is going too far.

eta: I know that this won't come close to being passed, but the mere fact that it was written freaks me out. It's indicative of the state of the country that anyone would dare be so openly bigoted and un-American as to suggest controlling women's childbearing based on marital status or "family values."

This is a sign of the times. And we need to know what the crazies are saying, because we must be prepared. Constant Vigilance! It's like reading "Brave New World"--it's an extremem situation, but it illuminates the less visible ways in which our society leans towards brave newness.

What's to stop gays and lesbians from doing the old-fashioned thing -- AI with a turkey baster? I mean, it's not as if they'd have to admit to it, and they could just raise the kid as co-parents but not life partners.

It's what people did before sperm banks became common.
