You are not permitted to call me “Mother,” child! Your mother died long ago, and your father too. I never wanted you. I do not love you. I will not be forced into mothering a filthy little weakling like you just because she was a fool who wanted you, just because he was a romantic idiot who didn't put his duty before his heart and forgot to look for knives in the hands of his loved ones. You are foolish too, and will last no longer, so don't you run to me with sticky little hands and unshod feet and call me “Mother.”
I won't love you. I never wanted this: children, husband, attendants. I was free once, wild girl with hair flaming in the wind and blood that could out-race it, and though that is lost to me there is this one compensation: I am the Queen of Narnia. A cage, but spacious and gilded, and moreover all I have. I have no need for a child, and no wish to care for one who has not even the grace of being my own. I want no foolish children to love while they take it all away from me.
