I bounced off the style of this interesting milSF work, but liked what I was starting to see of the clever and intricate magical system. Sometimes a stylization just isn't one's thing, you know? The one that stuck in my craw most was the phrase "a toxic" used to describe an alien plant, instead of just the adjective ... not illegitimate, but also oof. In the same way that a lot of the style choices, especially around pov, had hit wrong for me. Somehow vibes not 19thcentury enough for space adventure, a complaint I super recognize as highly personal & specific, lol!

I really liked this SF short story about people voluntarily turning into octopuses, chambered nautiluses, and crabs at the edges of the solar system. VERY stylized, but in a way that super worked for me, idk. Style ids are not to be explained. Lots of clever & subtle gender/sexuality implications in the portrayal of chosen, often-misunderstood transition.
