Hillary Clinton changed the discourse on the Hyde Amendment. Today, hearing that Joe Biden has found that the prevailing political winds now favor total reproductive rights on the Democratic side of things, I remember Hillary Clinton speaking about the medical, social, and moral necessity of late-term abortion during the 3rd Presidential debate in 2016. I was at my aunt's, sitting with my mother and grandmother, and I caught my breath when Secretary Clinton broke that political ground; I knew in the moment I was seeing someone do something brave and potentially movement-changing. She'd burned that alibi. She came out in opposition to the Hyde Amendment, and after that, it would never again look like a reasonable compromise.

I'm very worried about reproductive rights in this country; my new-old home state, Illinois, is preparing for a potentially overwhelming wave of Gilead refugees from Missouri, where the leg is ready to show women just how far their constitutional entitlements will get them. (Hint: not far.) But, just as I bridled at the minimization of HRC's achievements during the 2016 Presidential campaign, I'm still defensive of her role in the history of these days, which is not talked of nearly enough.
