I'd have to think about JE as counter discourse - my instinct is to say yes, and Bad Boy Rochester is a way to tame the book back into discourse - but that part of it is pretty darn discourse.
Yes, very much this - I keep insisting to myself that I'm square with that critique, that I can isolate the racism from the rest of my passionate enjoyment of the book, but I'm still not entirely sure that I've dealt with and internalized it. Because it's just so terrible, and I genuinely do think it's just about the only thing Charlotte does wrong but she does it so very wrong that just. Argh.
