I have unabashedly loved Rochester since the second time I read the book (the first time I was far too young and could only see the melodrama of the story instead of the characters). What always delights me about him is how intelligent he is - it shows in his unsparing contempt for his own past actions - and how funny he is - the line about "Arithmetic is useful, you see," remains my favorite because he's such an unrepentant weirdo at that moment.
