Why does my home state have to be an asshat?

The Michigan House just passed a bill that allows pharmacists to refuse service to customers based on ethical objections. At the moment, that means that they can choose not to give me my bloody birth control, which is pretty scary in and of itself, because that choice? Not one that they should get to make. But worse is this: while the bill protects customers from racial discrimination, there's nothing about sexual. So that means that pharmacists in Michigan are looking at being able to stop homosexuals from buying medication.

And who's going to enfore the anti-discrimination clauses? It would be easy to work around. Refuse the colored girls birth control but dispense it to the caucasians. Fake your reasons well enough and you could enforce your own moral values on anyone you like by refusing to sell them painkillers or fever-reducers. They only meant this to be about controlling women's reproductive systems, but they've got themselves a hell of a lot more than that.

God. This is unbelievable. And the MI Senate is waaaay Republican. We don't stand a chance.

This is actually an issue that hits close to home, because I have two friends who have suffered from ovarian cysts. A major component of treatment for ovarian cysts is birth control pills.

Pharmacists cannot know what that woman needs birth control pills for. They could be for a painful, life-threatening illness for all they know. They have NO right to refuse women these pills for ideological reasons.

our dinner conversation was so much fun. Gah, but politics are stupid. I think the whole kosher groceries idea was the best example. A Jewish worker at Graul's can't refuse to sell you non Kosher things. So they have their own groceries. Why the medical and medicine world has to be so messed up right now is just frustrating. I'm really glad there is another female out there who shares a lot of my political rants.
