I'll care about Osama Bin Laden's death when Guantanamo Bay can be closed down. Until the appalling human rights abuses that followed 9/11 are ended, I see no reason at all to celebrate. The war's not over; increasingly I wonder if it ever will be.

btw, Canada, good luck in your election - here's hoping that you'll have a real reason to celebrate.

I've been ruminating in the back of my head since I got the news as to why I wasn't more excited about it--after all, the boogeyman is dead. You've just neatly articulated it--the war is not over, not abroad and not here. Just 'cause we cut off one of the hydra's heads doesn't mean it's dead.

If his death instills a renewed drive to actually end all the atrocities of this war, then I'll celebrate.

Sadly, I can't believe that it will - jingoism is rarely good for our ability to actually get things done. I was thinking this afternoon that very few of my current students likely remember life when we weren't at war, and that depressed me nicely!
