I imagine that applications are a sort of necessary evil at best and nobody likes writing them and nobody likes reading them either, aside from the occasional fake essay that goes viral. It's such a constrained and stylized form of engagement; there's only so much you can really do to put across your real self and ideas and interests.

God, exactly. It would be soooo much less of a deal if there was some way to engage in, oh I don't know, real communication? But it's so awkward and fake-ish and gack.

You're right, though - I bet no one likes reading them either. Nuisance all around.
