Samuel Delaney had an interesting comment about Finn in his review - he said that Finn read to him as a basically suburban character, the sweet soft protected child appalled by the first encounter with bloody reality. I do think that Delaney's right about there being something wrong with the way Finn's backstory + turn to the good side are narratively constructed, something that fails to add up to what we see on the screen.
