Gorgeous. Yep, this happened. I believe it. Loved Dean so confused, not understanding what happened to make Sam like that. But once he understood it, man, what else could he do but just hold his brother tight and safe and warm? Poor Sam. Methinks Sam was not the only one doing some cleaning.

In my canon, Dean knows what it's like to hunt alone, without Sam, without his dad, and that was always awful and dark. He would never, ever want that for Sam.
